Episode 25

Casual Sex in the Cineplex

by The Sultans of Ping FC

Morty McCarthy – The Sultans of Ping
“If there’s one person you want doing a documentary on your band it’s Paul McDermott. We have listened to his fantastic detail-filled documentaries over the years and they never disappoint. Paul shines a light on parts of Irish music that are often hidden and he brings the past to life with his attention to detail. The Sultans of Ping were thrilled when Paul contacted us about doing a documentary and we are delighted to see him tell our story - warts and all.”

Niall O’Flaherty – The Sultans of Ping
”I had to be cajoled into participating but did so because of Paul’s reputation. We really want to thank Paul. He’s done a great job with this documentary, he really pulled out all the stops to capture the spirit of the band.”

Episode Notes

Episode 25 of To Here Knows When - Great Irish Albums Revisited focuses on Casual Sex in the Cineplex the debut album by the The Sultans of Ping FC .

The Sultans celebrated the 30th anniversary of the release of their debut album with two hometown gigs at the Cork Opera House on 10 and 11 of February 2023. The sold out shows were triumphant, celebratory affairs. Des O’Driscoll ended his Irish Examiner review of Friday’s gig by writing, “On the Dancing in the Disco documentary on RTÉ 2xm earlier in the week, there were tales of the band being battered by beer cans in Limerick, and pelted with coins in Italy. Back on Leeside the Sultans were simply showered with love.”

For this episode of the podcast I present that documentary.
